The Rehearse-to-Film Cycle is a director-led process that gives actors the opportunity to develop a scene through rehearsal before stepping onto set to bring the work to life on camera. Developed through years of directing actors across film and theatre, the Cycle is built around a simple belief:
I call it the ‘Source of Truth’. It’s that moment when the interference (those bombarding thoughts) no longer dictates the direction, and you freely connect to the truth of the feeling, enabling you to understand the character in that moment and beyond. Then, you can take the character anywhere, experiencing freedom in your expression and imagination.
Unlike a traditional showreel shoot, the focus isn’t simply on producing footage. Every part of the Cycle is designed to support the actor’s process – from the first conversation about the scene to the final take on set.
The result is twofold: a deeper experience of the work itself, and a cinematic scene that reflects the performance you’ve built.
The Three Principles
Everything within the Rehearse-to-Film Cycle is guided by three principles.
1. Rehearse Deeply
Understanding and imagination creates possibility.
The rehearsal isn’t about finding a result as quickly as possible. It’s about giving the work room to develop.
Through scene analysis and character exploration, this director-led rehearsal, frees the performance from interference, facilitating endless discoveries through instinctive decision making.
2. Perform Truthfully
With the right approach to preparation, performance finds clarity and fluidity. Instead of the constant self-analysis and hyperfocus on achieving the right outcomes, the actor develops a connection to their instincts. This guided process shows the actor how to remove the barriers to connection, so attention is organically focused on truth and imagination within the circumstances of the scene.
Acting shouldn’t be a reconstruction of emotion.
It’s truthfully experiencing emotion!
Through the director-led process, this is where we arrive; to understand the depth of the moment and how to live in it!
3. Film Professionally
Filming takes place on location within a professionally run production environment using a professional camera, lighting and sound.
By separating rehearsal from filming, actors arrive on set with the work already alive, allowing the filming day to reflect the rhythm and collaborative nature of a professional screen production.
The actor is free to make endless discoveries.
The camera captures the performance.
The Cycle
Session One —Rehearsal
A private 1.5 hour rehearsal with both actors.
During the session we will:
- Bespoke Scene (received one week before rehearsal)
- Analyse the scene
- Explore character
- Clarify relationships and objectives
- Develop the performance through director-led rehearsal
Session Two — Filming
On a separate day, the scene is filmed on location.
The session includes:
- Professional camera, lighting and sound
- Multiple camera angles and coverage
- Director-led performances throughout filming
- A structured production workflow
Because rehearsal and filming happen on different days, actors arrive on set free to concentrate on the performance rather than the preparation.
